Nifty closes above 4400; HDFC, Tata Steel gain

MUMBAI: Benchmarks closed near day's high on Friday ahead of the union budget led by gains in banks, capital goods and pharmaceuticals space. Broader markets underpormed the key indices and ended with modest gains.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 4421.45 up 72.60 points or 1.67 per cent. The broader index touched an intra-day high of 4434.45 and intra-day low of 4298.95.

Bombay Stock Exchanges’ Sensex closed at 14,889.43 up 230.94 points or 1.58 per cent. The index touched a high of 14945.85 and low of 14499.74.

BSE Midcap Index was up 0.72 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 0.37 per cent higher.

All the sectoral indices were in the green. BSE Capital Goods Index moved 2 per cent higher, BSE Bankex gained 1.7 per cent and BSE Power Index was up 1.77 per cent.

HDFC (7.66%), Cipla (4.88%), Tata Steel (4.38%), Ranbaxy Laboratories (3.59%) and Punjab National Bank (3.47%) were amongst the Sensex gainers.

Cairn India (-1.99%), Hindalco (-1.83%), Hero Honda (-1.22%), Sterlite Industries (-1.13%) and NALCO (-0.96%) were amongst the losers.

Market breadth was positive on the BSE with 1315 advances and 1280 declines. link....
